Prof. Izael Da. Silva has a PhD and MSc in Power Systems Engineering from the University of Sao Paulo, and BSc in Power Systems and Telecommunication from the Federal University of Parana.
Presently Professor and Deputy Vice Chancellor – Research and Innovation at Strathmore University. For 13 years before this, he was an Associate Professor at Makerere University, in the College of Engineering Design Arts and Technology.
In October 2014, he helped set up the Association of Energy Professionals (Eastern Africa) as a chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers. In November 2016, the Kenyan Ministry of Energy and Petroleum appointed him to chair the Independent Power Producer, Power Purchase Agreement (IPP/PPA) taskforce, constituted to help reduce the national electricity tariff. He is also an Energy Auditor with the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
Prof. Izael’s research interests include Sustainable Development Goals; renewable energy; energy efficiency; climate change mitigation and adaptation; sustainable development and demand side management. He started the Strathmore Energy Research Centre (SERC), which does training, research, testing and consultancy services in energy related topics, promoting sustainable development and international cooperation. He has also written extensively on these issues.
He is a member of a number of professional bodies such as Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) – (Atlanta, USA); Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE); Africa Europe Energy Partnership (AEEP); AdHoc Committee for the IEEE Board to develop engineering related activities in Africa; Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the Institute of Engineers of Kenya (IEK). In 2013 he was honoured with the title of “Comendador da Ordem do Rio Branco” by the Brazilian government for his services towards education and poverty alleviation in Africa.
